In traditional Hebrew biblical thought, a child who has a mother but no father is considered an orphan. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob highlights two of the His major roles: He is a Father, and He is a Husband. “ You shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child” (Ex. The Lord makes it clear that He insists on justice for the fatherless and widows: “ …Cursed is the one who perverts the justice due the stranger, the fatherless, and widow…” (Deut. The Hebrew word for “defender” is da-YAHN, literally, judge. The Hebrew word for “fatherless” is yeh-toe-MEEM, and the word for “widows” is ahl-mah-NOTE. King David gave us the most quoted psalm about these beloved ones of God: “ A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy habitation” (Psalm 68:5). The Lord is reminding us this month that He has not forgotten anyone-especially orphans and widows. O.Dear Mishpocha (Family), Orphans and Widows He has a great love for the children, and has a very practical focus on what Ahero Hope Center & Orphanage is trying to achieve, and how the children can fulfill their potential.įounder members and present member of governing body: Pastor Dan Dalton. The founder, Pastor Dan Omondi Ngage, who started taking children into his home in 2007, is a man of great integrity who commands respect from all who know him. It will also be possible for gap-year students and others to stay at the centre. A team goes out to spend time with the children and staff at least once a year. The Centre is a source of real, practical help and support for these children, and it provides pastoral care to nurture the children and make up for what their parents can no longer give. The main activity is subsistence farming. This area many rural, but it is densely populated by families living in settlements in the bush. Ahero Hope Center & Orphanage serves a catchment which is defined by how far the children can walk which is up to 12 miles. Most of them are placed with local families – this is the Kenyan orphanage model. The Center currently looks after around 114 children from the surrounding area, a number of whom were street children. Many children suffer with repeated attacks of malaria, which is debilitating and can be fatal, especially for a malnourished child. Only 15% of children under 5 have a mosquito net. 10-30,000 children are caught up in the sex trade. Almost 25% of the population lives on less than $1 a day. There are now over 2,500,000 orphans in Kenya. Seasonal flooding periodically makes the local roads and tracks impassable which brings communications to a halt. This is 335 miles from Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, and Kisumu, the nearest major town, is 21 miles away on the shores of Lake Victoria. The Centre is located near Ahero Town in Kisumu County Kenya.
